Budget Season 2015

RE: Budget Season 2015
A few decades ago, the superintendent of schools over here was running the budget like a slush fund. The school board didn't do anything about it because the superintendent had recruited the board members to run. This stuff happens if you allow it. A citizen audit committee was formed and the citizens demanded to see every single check that was written from the school budget. The superintendent said, "No." We made the request under the Freedom of Information Act. We got to see the check stubs. The superintendent left. All it takes is a determined group of citizens to say, "Enough is enough!"

RE: Budget Season 2015
There are lots of problems with the school budget process....that have discouraged many voters. The "unionized" school employees (Teachers, cooks, bus drivers, janitors, ed techs and so on) their spouses, children, parents, siblings, cousins and so on, make up a HUGE voting bloc in the small towns. Back in Deer Isle/Stonington, they could bring 300 votes to a budget meeting.....and often did!

Here locally the SAD 41 school budget(Brownville, Milo, LaGrange and Atkinson) went to a referendum vote, district wide last week. The result?

106 "Yays"

52 "Nays"

A TOTAL vote of only 158 voters out of those 4 towns????

The Deer Isle CSD budget is now close to 6 million....for 350 K-12 students, a student population that is shrinking as Massachusetts buys up all the shore land and business district!

Nobody cares and you can't blame em in some ways!
